Adoption Feedback - Happy Tails

These are just a few of the hundreds of animals who are successfully adopted from the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter every year! This is why we do what we do every day.

Won't you please consider getting your next pet from a shelter?

If you have a Happy Tail from CVAS, email your story and picture to cvasoc@innernet.net to be included in this page.

  "Violet"

I adopted Violet from CVAS about 5 months ago.  I grew up in a household that always had a cat, dog, or both.  I didn't even think about adopting a pet and then all of a sudden one day I realized I couldn't live without one!  I visited CVAS and immediately fell in love with a 2 year old cat named Violet.  I knew I had a treasure when I was carrying her out of the shelter and one of the volunteers came up to me and told me how excited she was Violet was getting a home.  She told me Violet was one of her favorites.

Violet has brought so much joy into my life.  She has made my house into a home.  Every evening when I arrive home from work she is right at the door meowing her greeting.  She can be found sleeping on any bed, chair, or sofa, the mantle, or in the window on a warmer day.  But when it's time for me to head to sleep, she is right by my side.  She likes to snuggle right next to me for a few minutes and then she moves to the foot of the bed and curls up and goes to sleep.  I can tell she's so happy to have a home and someone to love her.  And I feel the same about her!

I've attached some pictures of Violet doing what she loves best - napping.

She has become the star of my house.  My nieces love her, my family loves her, and so do my friends.  She's just precious.  Thanks to the friendly and kind staff at CVAS.  You made the adoption process easy and fun.   Violet and I send our thanks!

Mary Beth

  "Bangor"

Hello CVAS friends at the shelter,
FINALLY I have some good pics to send. Bangor is a total dear and we love her to pieces!  Very dainty, yet loves to roughhouse with Woody who is half again her size!

Have a great week!

  "Kittana"

Dear CVAS,

Angie, you were right!!!  And, thanks for letting us adopt a cat.  Kittana is loveable and huggable and a joy to have in our home.  She seems to love hanging out with us around the house no matter what we are doing.  She even gives my daughter and I kisses on the nose each day.  She has been lounging around a lot and we are getting enjoyment out of pampering her.  I feel so blessed that my daughter and I were the lucky ones to give her a second chance!!  She was an answer to my prayers!!  This is one special Kittie with a magnetic personality for sure!!!  Thanks CVAS, and God bless each of you for what you do!

  "Jasmine"

Here are some pictures of Jasmine (taken in the first few days after we brought her home).

We LOVE this dog.  She has quickly integrated into our family and life and seems quite happy here with us.  Of course, she’s in doggie paradise in our home.

She’s enjoying her new-found freedom in her big yard (3/4 acre).  As I mentioned, she is beginning week 3 of her invisible fence training.  It’s “watch” week where she can be in the yard by herself while we keep an eye on her.  She absolutely loves to run and chase sticks and balls.

Jasmine has visited our older son and his friends at college (she was a very big hit), has gone with our daughter Adrienne to work at the horse farm (she licked the nose of one of my daughter’s favorite horses), travels to Pet Smart with Adrienne to pick out dog toys (I’m not kidding – yesterday they came home with a booda (sp?) bone that Adrienne said liked better than the others).

She is very sweet, intelligent, eager to please, and obedient.  We will be taking her to obedience classes beginning in early March and are thinking of training her to be a therapy dog.

We are thoroughly enjoying having her to share our life.  She most definitely has filled a void left by the death of our previous German Shepherd, Heidi.

Thank you for taking good care of her until we found her and adopted her.  Please share the pictures with the other CVAS staff.

Have a great weekend!

Melanie

  "Cocoa"

Hi CVAS,

We just wanted to thank you so much for our sweet girl - Cocoa. She has been such a wonderful addition to our family. We brought her home in the beginning of December 2008. From the moment she stepped out of our van, she was completely at home. She is the best playmate to our kids. She loves to play fetch and tug-of-war. She is a "daddy's girl" and follows my husband around all the time. When we first got her she had a serious limp and the vet said she really needed surgery. However, over the past 2 months the limp has gone away. With a lot of TLC and a very cushiony bed, her legs improved dramatically! She may still need surgery in the future, but for now she is doing well. We want to thank you so much for taking care of her and allowing us to bring her home. We love her more than we can tell you. We're looking forward to this summer when we can go hiking, swimming and camping. We'll send you updates periodically.

Thanks again!

  "Brody"

  Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share a picture of "Sam" with you.  FYI - His name is now Brody, because the last name of the folks who told us about him is "Brodish."  We took him to the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay this past weekend, and this is a picture my sister took of Sam and him.  Boy, is he ever a "beach dog."  He loved, loved, LOVED the
water!!!  He stays right with us, and on Saturday there was no one else there on the beach (small private beach) so we were able to have him off-leash.  He ripped up and down the water's edge, and, at one point, his Retriever gene kicked in -- jumped right in after a duck.  That water was COLD, but he didn't seem to mind it a bit.   We had bought a couple of those balls on a tether, so he was chasing his ball up and down the beach too.  He was one t-i-r-e-d happy puppy that night.  :) I have video of him playing on the beach, and if I can figure out how to send it in an email, I'll forward that, too.

Somebody trained this dog.  I don't know who, but he's a GOOD dog.   I feel bad that they lost him.  (if they lost their house and just turned him out, though,  I don't feel bad at all.)

We'll stop by some time soon to visit when we get up there. More later . . .

Caryl

  "Bernice"

Just wanted to say thanks for approving us to adopt Bernice, she loves her new house and playmate.  She did really great right off the bat.  She has taken to us and her new surroundings without a hitch. I took a few pictures of her, and I've attached them to this email. Thanks again!

  "Harley"

  Hi!

Just wanted to let you know I just love my new home.  This place has so many places to take naps and just chill!!  Jim and Linda play with me a lot and I pretty much took over every corner of the house.

They went away and I swept 4 rooms for them with their handy dandy new "pet edition" Roomba sweeper.  I just touched the light on the top that said "Clean' and the thing just took off.  It went all around for a long time.  They were very surprised when they came home and the Roomba was all out of charge and the filter was full!  It ate one of my puff balls and Jim gave it back when he cleaned it.

Thanks for giving me to Jim and Linda!

"Cash"

  Hey guys,

I just had to write you and tell you how awesome it has been with "Cash." I think we are the luckiest family ever! He has been the best dog so far. He roams the house, he listens well and the kids love him!! He also has a lot of fun in our back yard. He plays catch and trys to catch the frisbee!!  I will definitely send more pics soon. We are loving him!! Thank you so much!!

Angela and family

  "Scotland"

Scotland is adjusting to his new home; playing, eating well, using litter box and
purring like crazy. Loves the sunshine on our enclosed porch.  He is very gentle and laid-back, however also loves to play!  I attached some photos from the weekend. I think we are going to call him Scotty, however not 100 percent sure.

He has a vet appointment on Thursday, and we will send the postcard back to you.

You and your staff do a wonderful job at the shelter. We are happy we came to you, and will look forward to staying in touch.

Beth

  "Polly"

Here are some picture updates of Polly. She had her vet visit on Friday and we renamed her Bella, and she's still pretty shy from time to time, but she loves the other kitties. She and our other young cat, shown in the pictures, are now best friends. It's adorable, and she is so sweet. Thank you!

Danielle

  "Cutie Pie"

Just wanted to email  you all and let you know how much we enjoy having Cutie Pie (Princess) in our home. She is such a joy and gets along great with our other cats. We are so glad we adopted her. I hope the pic of her turned out okay. Thank you so much for letting us adopt this wonderful kitty.

Sincerely,

Louisa. Jr., Brandi, and Brenden

  "Maggie"

Just wanted to let you know how "Matilda", who we renamed Maggie is doing. She is a good dog. She quickly learned some commands and rarely has an accident in the house. She and Penny, our Golden have become inseparable. We are really happy she is a part of our family.

  "Brie and Munchkin"

  Hi Everyone,
Monterey's name changed because she is a real muncher now, so I call her Munchkin. Brie is still my alarm clock, waking me up on weekends at exactly 7:00. She is always patting my nose and when I get out of bed grabs my leg, meaning hurry up and feed me Mom.

Hope all is well, Linda

  "Madison"

My boyfriend and I adopted a precious 10 week old beagle mix puppy named Rouge in March of 2008. Rouge, who we now lovingly refer to as Madison, has been such a blessing in our lives! She has such incredible spunk and personality. She visits the horses at the barn, stays at her grandfather's house, and plays around the house with her 6 year old papillon sister. Thank you so much for all that you did for our little girl when you found her at 5 weeks and for allowing us to bring her into our lives. We will definitely continue to adopt all our furry friends in the future.

  "Jupiter"

Hi everyone at Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter!

This is from Simon, my new mom is typing it for me. She calls me Jupiter and sometimes Jumping Jupiter 'cause I can even jump over my new doggie gate. LOL

I love my new home. It's quiet and warm. I get to go for walks all the time -- even in the middle of the night to go potty, when I wake mommy up to take me out.  We love to chase balls and rope toys all over the house, 'til I get tired and cuddle up on the sofa with my new teddy bear.

My new mom stayed home from work yesterday so I could get used to the place before she went back to work. I was such a good boy today I just lazed around the house 'til she got home and didn't make a mess at all, and then we went running.

I'm gonna come out to visit you guys this weekend for the Christmas party so I can have my picture taken with Santa Claus. But I'm not gonna ask him for anything for me, since I have so many new things to play with and sniff and see. Although I may ask him to find a good home for all my buddies at CVAS for Christmas so they can be happy too.

I've met some of my pet neighbors already a cat and 2 horses across the drive, they are sooooo big :P

When the other doggies across the drive and their mom come home, I'm going to meet them and play with them too.

I'm a little leery of any men in the neighborhood but I'm getting used to them, since they only pet me and give me treats so I'm not so scared of them.

My new mom tells me I don't have to worry about any new noises or guard the house, because she'll protect me and won't let anyone in the door but I growl or bark anyway.

Well, I'm going to go jump on my bed now with my teddy bear and get some sleep because I'm all tired from running and playing.

See you all soon.

Love, Simon aka Jupiter

  "Skye"

Hello this is the Bolin's we just wanted to send you a few pictures of Skye making herself at home. She is doing really well. She and Daisy have been getting along really well also. Skye say's she would like to thank you for all you did for her while she was there. We are so happy and glad to give her a home. Our whole family just loves her. She had a great Christmas we will send some pictures when we get them sorted through. Thanks again for all you have done. God bless.

The Bolin's

  "Cooper"

Hi my name is Cooper, a.k.a. Cliff. I was adopted into a loving family back in June.  I was welcomed into my home by three other doggies. My brother Riley who's is lying next to me (in the photo) is my favorite. He sometimes pats me on the head with his paw and snuggles next to me on my bed at night time. I have a sister Raven who is on this page as well, she tries to shove me off my bed at night when I sleep, and I also have another sister, her name is Athena, she's a lil' crazy.  We are all shelter dogs!

I guess my mommies love adopting dogs, I dunno. I was kinda a tyrant when I got home because I have separation anxiety, so I got into a lot of things I shouldn't have when I was left along, I don’t really like to be left alone much, especially in the beginning.  But now, I have a nice kennel to go into when my owners are at work.  My favorite day of the week is Sundays, that is Pancake Day and boy oh boy do I love pancakes with syrup!  Some mornings I even get bacon.

I really do nothing else too exciting because well, I just like to lie around.  If you are ever looking for me, you can find me next to my mommy when she is sitting on the sofa, or I'm up on my bed with all my stuffed animal friends, that I confiscate from Athena.  She won't miss them.

I am so happy to be adopted and to be in a home where I can get the attention that I need, kisses all the time and tons of stuffed animals.

Thanks CVAS for giving me a loving and caring home.

Traci and Heather

  "Lilly"

“Lilly” is wonderful and such a welcome addition to our home. She really is everything we had hoped for when we decided to adopt a cat. Lilly has a very sweet, affectionate nature, loves to play, snuggle and sometimes seems content to just lie and watch whatever we are doing.

Her favorite place is on top of her “cat tree” she loves to sleep there and also look out the window at all that is going on in the yard, birds, chipmunks, squirrels all kinds of activity to keep an eye on. She also knows that she will get her morning treat with a brushing if she gets on her tree first thing in the morning as my husband is getting ready to leave for work.

Lilly’s favorite toy is a long furry tail with a fur ball on the end, she drags it all over the house and she would love it if we would allow her to have it on the bed at night, but that really doesn’t work, its hard to sleep with her pouncing around. We love Lilly and look forward to many years having her part of our family.

  "Rhea"

CVAS Friends: Rhea is adjusting perfectly to her new home. She is chatty and affectionate and loves to lie in the sun in the bay window and watch the birds. Her other favorite spot is the bedroom window on the second floor where she can look down into the backyard and watch the kids playing and making all kinds of noise.

Rhea is exactly the kind of cat we were looking for – loves a good scratch or brush, sleeps and snuggles up to you on the recliner and ‘talks’ to you when she wants your attention. She likes to play with her toys and seems to think if the food bowl is not full, life as we know it must come to a screeching halt – she isn’t necessarily interested in eating, mind you, just wants to be sure the food bowl is full.

Thanks CVAS for our new family member!

  "Sam"

Thank you for allowing us to adopt Sam. He is really great and fun to have around. He is curious and playful. He gets along with all four dogs, Pixie, Bailey, Princess and Bear (big and small). He likes to play the sneaking game and then smack the other dogs around and they sit there wondering what just happened to them. He will do that with us also. He is a very funny kitten. He loves to look out the window and watch everything go by. He likes to sunbathe and try to catch the birds that fly by. He really likes to be around my husband all the time. He is very curious about everything. He likes to watch TV and even tries to attack the puppies through the television.

Sammy has been a joy to have around. He has gotten a lot more active since we got him. He also enjoys eating bagels with cream cheese, but not toast. He likes to sit behind whoever is at the computer and will try to help you type. He sounds like a dog running up and down the stairs. He really enjoys his new home with us. Thank you for Sammy Joe.

Sincerely, Patti and Frank

  "Riley and Raven"

We just wanted to thank you for allowing us to adopt "Colt 44", a couple of weeks ago. His new name is Riley. He just is an absolute doll. His adjustment into our home was just almost second nature to him. Our other dog Raven is by his side non-stop. He still gallops (or pounces) when he wants attention and goes straight to the door to be left out. We have only had a few minor accidents in the house, but that is all natural considering he is still just a pup. We keep wondering why he was ever dropped off at the shelter in the manner he was but we are so thankful he has found his way into our loving home...
As you can see by the photo he has already made a new friend "Curious George" in the background, albeit missing an eye after tugging on him with Raven.

Thank you again...we absolutely love him.

Traci & Heather

  "Bailey"

Bailey has been an important addition to our home. Bailey is doing well and we love him very much. Perhaps in a little while we will find him a brother or sister too. Thank you for all of your consideration during our adoption process.
Stacey and Lisa

  "Jesse"

April and I would just like to say thank you for bringing Jesse into our lives...You couldn't want a better dog. My wife was not really sure of what kind of dog we were getting. Boy did she get surprised how well mannered Jesse is. He has adapted well to his new home and is such a good boy. He has a little sister Maggie who he loves to play with. He just loves the kids and loves to go out in his fenced in yard and run around and play. Again we would like to thank you for bringing us and Jesse James together. Maggie thanks you too!!
Thank You,
 John and April

  "Ritchie"

About a month ago I adopted Ritchie from Petsmart in Carlisle. He was a bit scared at first, but I wanted to let you all know he's doing fantastic! Ritchie wasn't sure what to make of my dogs at first, but they get along well now, and Ritchie LOVES to play! He greets me in the morning in my bathroom and we play with a ribbon while I get ready for work. He has the cutest meow, a little high-pitched with a purr mixed in. I've attatched a pic of him. Thank you for the opportunity to have such a wonderful cat join my family!!
Michele

  "Butch"

Dear CVAS Friends,

Here are the latest photos of Butch. He loves that blue bed. He's becoming more and more attached to us. He has the same facial expression whether he's happy or sad. He's very good at "sit and shake hands (with both paws)." He's a delight at home.

Warm regards,

Ken and Jo

  "Twister" (on left)

Hi, I adopted Twister 2 weeks ago and she has adjusted very well in her new home. Twister was not the least bit bothered by new surroundings, it was as if she knew when she came in the door she was home. I must say that Twister and her new sister Pepper which is a Schnauzer make me laugh more than any comedy show, the energy they have is unbelievable.  Both babies sleep in bed with me pushing and shoving to make sure they are as close to me as possible, it is a sight. I am really glad that I got the call to come and get her, she is a very welcome addition to the family and Pepper thinks so too. Thank you so much.

"Buster, Miss Cleo and Miss Holly"

I thought that you may like to see current pictures of Buster, Miss Cleo (4 year old siblings) and 7 year old Miss Holly. I'm not sure if you remember this or not but we adopted all of them from CVAS in 2002. It's Buster (right) and Miss Cleo (left) wanting to go outside and Miss Holly taking a nap!!

"Bun Bun"

Hi, I adopted Beau, now BunBun, on August 1st of last year.  I was just writing to let you know what a joy she is.  I never knew that bunnies played like she does.  Right now she is enjoying plenty of fresh veggies from my garden, romaine lettuce is her favorite.  All she needed was a loving home.  I attached a picture for you to see her now.  Thanks for a wonderful pet!  Sincerely,  Stacey

  "Ducky and Scotch"

Ducky was adopted in January of 2006 and Scotch came to her new home not long after. Both were brought to the shelter taped in boxes (i.e. Duct tape and Scotch tape) and that is how they were named. They have adjusted well to us, our home and to each other! They love to play together, but always take the time to cuddle on the couch with us as well! They are a joy to have and we can't thank you enough for allowing Ducky and Scotch to be a part
of our family.

  "Oliver"

Hi! We adopted Ollie on 4-29-06.  He is doing so well!  What a great forever friend!  THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING US ADD THIS GREAT LITTLE GUY TO OUR FAMILY!!!  He is such a busy little guy but he is always ready for bed by 8:00 p.m. he just wears himself out playing with our other two dogs.
Thanks again,
Jackie and Adam

"Petey"

After visiting your website and reading all the "Happy Tails" I decided to send you my "happy 'Fluffy' tail."

I adopted 'Petey' in January 2002. He was brought in by an elderly man with 3 other siblings.  Petey was the only one that wasn't adopted immediately. You see, he has only 1/2 a leg in the back. When I came in, just to look and visit with your cats, I looked at Petey and fell in love with him! What a great big ball of fur he was! You told me I could take him out and so I did and he started walking around, what a shock to see him limping. You told me why and that he was born that way. I asked for an application...went home and got things ready...and 30 minutes later he was mine! You gave me an index card that his "old" owner gave to you. It said that Petey loves belly rubs, honey dew melon, and cantaloupe.

After 4 years, Petey still loves all those things. What a great cat...I'm so happy that he is mine and wouldn't have it any other way! Thank you for all your help and thank you for all you do for the cats and dogs.  And by the way, I still come in to visit your cats.  I would have a house full of them, if my husband would allow it!!

Kerri

  "Tommy Who and Chai Bombay"

  Hello,
We asked our new adopted mom to email you and let you know how we are doing. We have both settled in very well.  And so excited we were chosen by our new owners.  They are very kind and loving "parents" to us.  And look at the pictures attached at the neat "play gym" our new adopted dad MADE for us the very next day after they got us.  Hope you like our new names.  Maybe you can feature our pictures on the page for Adoption Feedback-Happy Tails because we are very happy and so are our new owners.  We are helping them get over their pain of losing their 15 year old cocker (Duncan).  And, if we must say, are doing a good job.  Thanks for allowing "us" to adopt our new owners.
Tommy Who and Chai Bombay

  "Ginji and Miroku"

Ginji, the orange tabby was adopted in July '05 and Miroku was adopted in Jan '05.  They are best friends and love to cuddle.  Both have made a wonderful addition to our house!

"Dinah"

Wanted to drop a note, and say how glad we are that we got to adopt Dinah
last Saturday.

She has been such a joy to my husband and I, she is a sweetie.   She has
adjusted well, to the doggie door, which allows the dogs to have run of the
house and big back fenced in yard.

We have renamed her official name to 'Dynamite', but still call her 'Dyna.'
She was used to the name, we didn't want to change.  All 3 dogs are getting
along. Dyna is so full of energy, the 2 labs watch her run full tilt around
the yard.

Thanks again.

Janet

"Storm"

Greetings everyone!  I want you to know we are enjoying Storm immensely and she has
settled well into her new home!  She is now crate trained and enjoys the few hours she must be there each day.  We live in the country and she is enjoying our long walks on nice days and has a favorite stuffed mouse toy she carries around the house (see picture).

She is doing much better greeting people in our home, but I crate her when people come to my home office on business.  She seems to do just fine with that.  Otherwise she has the run of the house and prefers to lie on the cool tile in the kitchen and look at the world through the dining room french doors.

She does really well with her commands most of the time and we are pleased to benefit from someone else's hard work in training her.

I highly recommend a book we got off the internet called Sit, Stay, Fetch.
It addresses dog training, correcting problems, and establishing alpha dog position and much more.  We have found it very helpful and believe it could be a great reference for others introducing a new dog into their home. We where very happy to have the suggestions it had on dealing with aggression!  And it actually worked!  (And no, I'm not getting any money for referrals...it just was what we needed!)

We also have used a 'gentle leader' system that make walks wonderful as Storm heels so much better with the gentle leader system than without it.

We are so thankful to have Storm as a member of our family!  The cat is even getting used to her now! This weekend Storm will get to meet our other son who is coming home from college.  I'm sure that will go well. Attached is a picture of the happy girl!
Thanks so much,
Bonnie
